Seealpsee, Switzerland

About photo

After two challenging weeks of hiking, Seealpsee was supposed to be our "easy" adventure. Nestled in the Alpstein range of Appenzell, Switzerland, this serene lake is known for its crystal-clear waters and breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains.

The trail, however, had other plans—steep, rocky, and cloaked in mist. My wife, expecting a leisurely walk, was quietly fuming. The silence between us matched the eerie calm of the fog-covered peaks. Seealpsee, at an elevation of 1,143 meters, has seen many visitors, but few might know it supplies hydroelectric power to the town of Appenzell. As we hiked, I couldn’t help but wonder if the beauty of the lake or my wife’s unspoken frustration was more powerful. The steep paths that led us here were once part of ancient trade routes, but today, they led us to a quiet standoff—between nature’s grandeur and the small, human dramas it inspires.
